Sardinia in winter: our van trip in the most magical season
An island that smells of juniper and freedom, a roadtrip between sea, mountains and the magic of feeling at home anywhere
We have toured Sardinia far and wide, but each time is like the first. This island has the gift of always surprising you, of welcoming you with silence, nature and true beauty. And if there is one season when it is really at its best, for us it is winter.
We like to experience it out of season.
From September to April, the island changes its face: the beaches empty out, the wind tells stories among the junipers, and the sea becomes a lullaby for van dwellers. Waking up to the ocean, alone, with only the sound of waves and salty wind is a pleasure for the soul and body. Many crowded corners in summer become intimate havens where time dilates and freedom is total.
But Sardinia is not just about the coast. During the colder months, we pushed inland, where the island gets tougher, authentic, real. In the mountains of Gennargentu and Barbagia, we found snow, ice, and deserted roads that looked like something out of a Nordic tale. On some nights, temperatures dropped below freezing, but in our house on wheels we were always warm thanks to our trusty Eberspächer heater. Our van, Big Oz, also held up perfectly, thanks to the Hydronic engine preheater, which prevented problems in the most frosty awakenings.
In nearly a year of exploration, we touched every corner of the island:
- from the wild peaks of the Supramonte to the villages where time passes slowly,
- from the islands of Sant'Antioco, Carloforte, Maddalena and Caprera,
- alternating days by the sea with trekking among the granite peaks of Supramonte.
We have always preferred the wilder and more authentic places, those where you don't find lidos or beach bars, but old men sitting in the sun, free goats and friendly shepherds.
So, our advice? Enjoy the island from late September to early April.
Discover it when there are no crowds.
Fall, winter, early spring-these are the best times to really experience it. That's when it gives you the best sunsets, the real talk, the wildest landscapes.
And if you are vanlifer or just on-the-road lover, it is the perfect time to experience the island calmly, without confusion, without filters.
Over the years, we have collected everything we have discovered in an interactive map:
- spots where to stop in a van,
- photo locations,
- treks with GPX tracks,
- water loads, useful services,
- and even our own YouTube video dedicated to Sardinia.

South Coast rocked by the sea and the wind

Traveling to Sardinia in the off-season is like having an island all to yourself: quiet, authentic, surprising. That's where we realized how powerful simplicity is and how little is needed to feel in the right place.
Sardinia in winter has a different energy.
Fewer people, more space, silence everywhere. We woke up in front of the sea, cuddled by the sound of the waves and the scent of the wind that smells of salt and juniper. We crossed the island from north to south, slept by the sea and drove through the snow-capped Barbagia mountains, always with our van and the heater on.
It was one of the most authentic experiences we have had on the road. We took the time to explore, to get lost, to listen. And the island gave it all back to us, with its simple and wild beauty.
If you're thinking of experiencing Sardinia in a van, off-season, we've collected everything you might need: spots to sleep, treks with GPX tracks, water loads, and a dedicated YouTube video. Write to us and we'll send you our map or help you build your own custom itinerary.
